HAYLETTS Gallery in Maldon has got another artistic coup with an exhibition of original prints by Dame Elizabeth Blackadder that starts this Saturday.

One of the UK's most popular living artists, Dame Elizabeth is noted for her pictures of flowers, plants, cats, Japanese gardens and still lives, employing a unique, attractive style.
After studying in Edinburgh, Blackadder received a travelling scholarship from the Royal Scottish Academy and journeyed through southern Europe, which was to influence her early work. In France, she learnt more about Henri Matisse with her colour palette becoming more colourful as a result.

Dame Elizabeth acknowledges that her use of form and colour is greatly influenced by Japanese art and design, with typical compositions arranged by setting up a group of objects and depicting them from above.
As a printmaker, she has experimented with a range of printing media including lithography, etching, aquatint, dry point, woodcut and screenprint.
She's exhibited around the world and was the first woman to be elected as a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy.
She was awarded an OBE in 1982 and her picture of three cats was used for a Royal Mail stamp in 2001. Dame Elizabeth lives and works in Edinburgh.
