WORLD number seven squash star Peter Barker is to undergo a knee operation that will see him out for six weeks.

The 28-year-old has torn the meniscus cartilage in his knee and has been carrying the injury since November.

It means he will miss next week's British national Championships in Manchester, but should be back in time for the European Championships at the end of April.

Barker, who lives in Shenfield and is a former Brentwood School pupil, told the Gazette: "It's been an ongoing problem. I've been having a lot of physio over the last few months.

"I managed to get through the last few major tournaments but it's come to the point where I need an operation.

"I was injured for the nationals last year so I don't seem to be having a great run.

"I'll be back for the British Open at the O2 in May, which is probably more important.

"This gives me a chance to get it fixed once and for all."
