"You will stand trial at Chelmsford Crown Court on August 13 and until then you must live and sleep in your residence at Bramwoods Road."

Bowerman, a former financial adviser, was granted unconditional bail after the court heard he had gone to see police after hearing about the allegations.

He did not wish to enter a plea at magistrates' court.

Defence counsel Mrs Julie Brice said: "He reported this crime himself.

"Mr Bowerman has lived in the area his whole life and his family are all here.

"His passport has been taken and he has been on unconditional bail for two years now."

The prosecutor Jeremy Temkin said it was the Crown's case that the alleged frauds were in the region of £7 million.

The charges Bowerman faces span from 2005 until 2010 and include five counts of fraud against Peter Stroud, the former chairman of Chelmsford City FC.
