Alcohol related hospital admissions up 12 per cent in Essex in past year

ALCOHOL-RELATED hospital admission soared by 12 per cent in the past year.

Director of health for NHS north cluster and Essex County Council, Dr Mike Gogarty said: "Essex has a slightly higher average in hospital admissions than other parts of the UK.

"The three North Essex PCTs have invested an additional £750,000 in the last two years for alcohol services."

Services such as IBA (identification and brief advice) has already seen thousands of people and alcohol specialist liaison officers, were also put in Broomfield Hospital in November 2011.

And NHS Mid Essex have become part of Compass, who help tackle problem drug and alcohol use. But last year 2,766 people used specialist alcohol services outside of the established groups.

Dr Gogarty added: "Many people do not know they have problems, so it is our job to identify more of these cases.

"The way in which funding comes in means if you invest earlier you will save money for the NHS in the long run.

"We have not turned a corner yet, but we know through research we have the right services in place, but it will just take time."
