Drivers have been urged to avoid the Hatfield Peverel area tonight following a crash which has damaged a bridge over the A12.

Two lanes of the southbound A12 are currently blocked after a digger being carried on a low-loader lorry struck the bridge and fell on to the carriageway. There were no injuries.

It happened shortly after 5pm today and has resulted in long delays on the southbound carriageway.

Recovery vehicles are on the way but A12 users have been warned that it could take two hours or more to lift the damaged digger.

The northbound carriageway of the A12 also has delays caused by drivers slowing down to look at the crash scene.

A structural engineer has been called to examine the bridge, known as the Wellington Bridge, which carries traffic to the northbound A12 on-slip road at Junction 20B. Access on to the bridge has been closed for safety reasons.

Officers from the Highways Agency are also at the scene.
